Yupun placed fifth in the World Athletics Championships..

Sri Lankan athlete Yupun Abeykoon participated in the preliminary round of the 100 meters running event of the 18th World Athletics Championship held in Oregon, USA this morning. There he was able to get fifth (5) place in the competition. Finishing the race in 10.19 seconds.

American athlete Trayvon Bromell finished the race in 9.89 seconds and won first place in that race. Ivory Coast(CIV) athlete Arthur Cisse finished the race second and it took him 10.02 seconds. The third place in the race went to the Brazilian running champion Rodrigo Do Nascimento who finished the race in 10.11 seconds.

Considered to be the fastest runner in South Asia, Yupun holds the 100m South Asian record and he also has the honour of being the only South Asian athlete to finish the 100m race in less than 10 seconds. Yupunt has also set a new Asian record in the 150m event. In addition, Yupun has won many international racing competitions.

ඇමෙරිකාවේ Oregonහි පැවැත්වෙන 18වන World Athletics Championship තරගාවලියේ මීටර් 100 ධාවන ඉසව්වේ මූලික වටයට අද දින පෙරවරුවේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා මලල ක්‍රීඩක යුපුන් අබේකෝන් සහභාගි වූවේ ය. එහිදි ඔහුට තරගයේ පස්වන (5) ස්ථානය හිමි කර ගත හැකි විය. ඒ තරගය තත්පර 10.19කින් නිමා කරමින් ය.

තත්පර 9.89කින් තරගය නිමා කළ ඇමෙරිකානු ක්‍රීඩක Trayvon Bromell එම තරගයේ ප්‍රථම ස්ථානය හිමි කර ගැනීමට සමත් වී තිබේ. Ivory Coast(CIV) ක්‍රීඩක Arthur Cisse තරගය දෙවනියට අවසන් කර ඇති අතර ඔහුට ඒ සඳහා තත්පර 10.02ක කාලයක් ගත වී තිබේ. තරගයේ තෙවන ස්ථානය තරගය තත්පර 10.11කින් අවසන් කළ බ්‍රසීල ධාවන ශුර Rodrigo Do Nascimento ට හිමි විය.

දකුණු ආසියාවේ වේගවත් ම ධාවන ක්‍රීඩකයා සේ සැලකෙන යුපුන් මීටර් 100 දකුණු ආසියානු වාර්තාවට හිමිකම් කියන අතර තත්පර 10ට අඩු කාලයක් තුළ මීටර් 100 ධාවන ඉසව්ව අවසන් කළ එක ම දකුණු ආසියානු ක්‍රීඩකයා යන ගෞරවය ද ඔහු සතු ය. මීටර් 150 ඉසව්වෙන් ද නව ආසියානු වාර්තාවක් යුපුන්ට විසින් පිහිටුවා තිබේ. මීට අමතරව යුපුන් ජාත්‍යන්තර ධාවන තරගාවලි රැසකදී ම ජයග්‍රහණයන් අත්කර ගෙන තිබේ.

அமெரிக்காவின் ஓரிகானில் இன்று காலை நடைபெற்ற 18வது உலக தடகள சம்பியன்ஷிப் போட்டியின் 100 மீற்றர் ஓட்டப் போட்டியின் ஆரம்ப சுற்றுப் போட்டியில் இலங்கை வீரர் யுபுன் அபேகோன் கலந்துகொண்டார். அங்கு அவர் போட்டியில் ஐந்தாவது (5) இடத்தைப் பெற முடிந்தது. பந்தயத்தை 10.19 வினாடிகளில் முடித்தார்.

இப்போட்டியில் அமெரிக்க வீரர் ட்ரேவோன் ப்ரோமெல் 9.89 வினாடிகளில் பந்தயத்தை முடித்து முதலிடம் பெற்றார். ஐவரி கோஸ்ட் (சிஐவி) தடகள வீரர் ஆர்தர் சிஸ்ஸே பந்தயத்தை இரண்டாவதாக முடித்தார், அது அவருக்கு 10.02 வினாடிகள் ஆனது. பந்தயத்தில் மூன்றாவது இடத்தை பிரேசிலின் ஓட்ட சாம்பியன் ரோட்ரிகோ டோ நாசிமென்டோ 10.11 வினாடிகளில் முடித்தார்.

தெற்காசியாவின் அதிவேக ஓட்டப்பந்தய வீரராகக் கருதப்படும் யுபுன் 100 மீ தெற்காசிய சாதனையைப் படைத்துள்ளார், மேலும் 100 மீ ஓட்டத்தை 10 வினாடிகளுக்குள் முடித்த ஒரே தெற்காசிய தடகள வீரர் என்ற பெருமையையும் பெற்றுள்ளார். 150 மீ ஓட்டத்தில் யுபுன்ட் புதிய ஆசிய சாதனையையும் படைத்துள்ளார். கூடுதலாக, யுபுன் பல சர்வதேச பந்தய போட்டிகளில் வென்றுள்ளார்.

Hero’s Welcome for Golden Girl Wasana

Sri Lanka celebrated in style as its lone gold medalist Nipuni Wasana at the 6th Asian Beach Games returned home to a rousing welcome, marking a proud moment for the nation.

Airwoman Nipuni Wasana stole the spotlight in Sanya, China, where she clinched gold in the Women’s 50kg Beach Wrestling event. In the final, she overcame Vietnam’s Doan Thi Kim Oanh with a composed and commanding performance, securing a historic victory for Sri Lanka.

Her achievement was met with a grand at Bandaranaike International Airport, where Air Force personnel, sports officials, and supporters gathered to honor her success. Wasana was also given the distinction of carrying the national flag at the closing ceremony, highlighting her status as the country’s top performer at the Games.

Sri Lanka wrapped up its campaign with a total of seven medals one gold, two silver, and four bronze demonstrating competitive strength across multiple disciplines.

The Women’s Beach Kabaddi team delivered an impressive performance to secure silver, while the Men’s team contributed with a bronze medal finish. In Athletics, Ishara Samanmali earned silver in the women’s long jump, and Sashikala Lankathilaka claimed bronze. The Men’s 4x60m relay team also added to the tally with a bronze-winning effort.

A contingent of 77 Sri Lankan athletes competed in eight sports at the Games. Although several disciplines did not produce medals, the team achieved a respectable 10th place overall.
Host nation China dominated the medal standings with 24 gold medals, followed by Thailand and Iran.

SLA Secretary Resigns Just Weeks After Appointment

Madhawa Bandara Senarath has stepped down from his role as Secretary of Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA), only about a month after assuming office. His resignation was submitted shortly before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, bringing an abrupt end to his brief tenure.

Sources indicate that internal disagreements within the newly appointed executive committee played a key role in his decision. The dispute is believed to have centered on the selection process for the National Junior Team set to compete at the upcoming Asian Junior Championship.

Sri Lanka Athletics is scheduled to hold its first executive committee meeting after the New Year on April 21. During this meeting, an acting secretary is expected to be appointed to temporarily fill the position. A permanent replacement will later be chosen at a special general meeting.
