Tharushi Karunarathne bags gold in 800m, Malith Yasiru wins Bronze in Men’s Triple Jump
20th Asian Under-20 Junior Athletic Championships 2023
Sri Lanka’s Tharushi Karunarathne and Malith Yasiru dominated day two of the 20th Asian Under-20 Junior Athletic Championships 2023 worked off at Yecheon, South Korea.
Tharushi Karunarathne brought Sri Lanka its first gold medal when she clocked a timing of 2:05.64 to end first in the 800m event.
Akbayan Nurmamet (2:10.22) of Kazakhstan finished second in the same event and third placed Yingying Qin (2:11.14) of China.
This was Tharushi’s second medal in the event where she also won the silver medal in the 800m event earlier on the opening day of the event.
Later on day two, Tharushi competed in the 4×400 relay event where Sri Lanka was able to finish on top with a timing of 3:25.41 and bring its second gold medal. Her other teammates were Jayeshi Uththara, Vinod Ariyawansha and Shehan Dilranga.
Other highlights of the day were Malith Yasiru who dazzled the track to finish on the podium when he won the Bronze medal in the Men’s Triple Jump event. Japan’s Miyao Manato bagged the Gold, while Ma Yinglong from China won the Silver.
After a dominant day two, Sri Lanka is placed fourth in the medals tally with 5 medals (2 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze), while Japan continues to lead the tally with a total of 12 medals and China is in second place with 10.
The 20th Asian Under-20 Junior Athletic Championships 2023 is being held from 4–7 June at the Yecheon Stadium in Yecheon, South Korea.
