The U20 World Athletics Championships are scheduled to be held in Cali, Colombia from August 1 to 6 this year. The squad of players representing Sri Lanka for the tournament had been officially announced. Five male players and two female players were selected for that.

Accordingly, Tarushi Karunaratne qualified for the women’s 400m and 800m events, while Amesha Hettiarachchi qualified for the women’s 400m hurdles event.

Hirusha Hashen has qualified for the men’s long jump event in the world championship and Pasindu Malshan has been selected to represent Sri Lanka in the triple jump event. Kaweesha Bandara has qualified to participate in the 110m hurdles event and Dhanuka Darshan has qualified to participate in the 400m hurdles event. A young Sri Lankan athlete was also qualified to represent the javelin throwing event in the Under-20 World Championship. He is Rumesh Tharanga.

However, these athletes have qualified for the World Championship Athletics Tournament for their skills, but due to the incompetence and irresponsible actions of the administration, these athletes have not participated in the World Championship Youth Athletics Tournament held in Colombia. That is because it is not possible to get air tickets to travel to Colombia. It is reported that the reason for this problem is that the Sports Ministry has allocated money for the tickets but did not reserve the tickets until the visas were received.
