Sri Lankan Juniors lose the opportunity of participating in the U20 World Athletics Championship!!!
The U20 World Athletics Championships are scheduled to be held in Cali, Colombia from August 1 to 6 this year. The squad of players representing Sri Lanka for the tournament had been officially announced. Five male players and two female players were selected for that.
Accordingly, Tarushi Karunaratne qualified for the women’s 400m and 800m events, while Amesha Hettiarachchi qualified for the women’s 400m hurdles event.
Hirusha Hashen has qualified for the men’s long jump event in the world championship and Pasindu Malshan has been selected to represent Sri Lanka in the triple jump event. Kaweesha Bandara has qualified to participate in the 110m hurdles event and Dhanuka Darshan has qualified to participate in the 400m hurdles event. A young Sri Lankan athlete was also qualified to represent the javelin throwing event in the Under-20 World Championship. He is Rumesh Tharanga.
However, these athletes have qualified for the World Championship Athletics Tournament for their skills, but due to the incompetence and irresponsible actions of the administration, these athletes have not participated in the World Championship Youth Athletics Tournament held in Colombia. That is because it is not possible to get air tickets to travel to Colombia. It is reported that the reason for this problem is that the Sports Ministry has allocated money for the tickets but did not reserve the tickets until the visas were received.

Tharanga Claims Historic Gold in Nairobi with Record-Breaking Throw
Sri Lanka’s rising javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga delivered a remarkable performance on the international stage, clinching gold at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi with a stunning meet record throw of 89.28 metres.
Competing against an elite field, Tharanga outshone some of the sport’s biggest names, including Olympic champion Thomas Röhler and Kenya’s celebrated Olympic silver medallist and world champion Julius Yego. His victory marks one of the most significant achievements in Sri Lankan athletics in recent years.

SLA Secretary Resigns Just Weeks After Appointment
Madhawa Bandara Senarath has stepped down from his role as Secretary of Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA), only about a month after assuming office. His resignation was submitted shortly before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, bringing an abrupt end to his brief tenure.
Sources indicate that internal disagreements within the newly appointed executive committee played a key role in his decision. The dispute is believed to have centered on the selection process for the National Junior Team set to compete at the upcoming Asian Junior Championship.
Sri Lanka Athletics is scheduled to hold its first executive committee meeting after the New Year on April 21. During this meeting, an acting secretary is expected to be appointed to temporarily fill the position. A permanent replacement will later be chosen at a special general meeting.
