Sri Lanka ‘A’ Women Cruise Past New Zealand ‘A’ Behind Vishmi, Dewmi Show

Vishmi Gunaratne produced a composed unbeaten half-century while Dewmi Vihanga starred with the ball as Sri Lanka ‘A’ Women secured a dominant 56-run victory over New Zealand ‘A’ Women in the second unofficial ODI at the Dambulla International Stadium on Saturday.
Batting first in the 20-over encounter, the hosts recovered from a few middle-order setbacks to post an imposing 152 for 5, with Vishmi anchoring the innings brilliantly.

Sri Lanka made a lively start through Sanjana Kavindi, who attacked the New Zealand bowlers early with a quickfire 27 off 20 balls, striking six boundaries before falling to Jess Watkin.
Vishmi then took charge of the innings, combining caution with timely aggression to keep the scoreboard moving. The left-hander found strong support from Vimoksha Balasuriya, who added 33 off 27 deliveries with two fours and two sixes during an important middle-order stand.

Although Sri Lanka lost a cluster of wickets late in the innings, Dewmi Vihanga’s explosive finish gave the innings further momentum. Dewmi blasted an unbeaten 14 from only three balls, including a six and two boundaries, helping the hosts finish strongly at the death.
New Zealand ‘A’ began the chase poorly and struggled to recover after losing wickets regularly against disciplined Sri Lankan bowling.

Captain Jess Watkin was dismissed in the opening over before Chamudi Praboda removed both Kate Anderson and JA Watkins to leave the visitors under pressure.

The innings never gained stability as Sri Lanka tightened their grip through the middle overs. Dewmi Vihanga then delivered the decisive blows, dismissing Tash Wakelin, Bella Armstrong and the dangerous Emma Black to effectively end New Zealand’s hopes.

Emma Black provided the lone resistance with an aggressive 28 off 20 balls, but the visitors were eventually bowled out for 96 in 19.5 overs.

Dewmi finished with impressive figures of 3 for 19 while Chamudi Praboda supported well with 2 for 15 as Sri Lanka ‘A’ completed a comprehensive all-round performance.

Pakistan Women produced a composed batting performance led by Gull Feroza and Sidra Amin to register a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka Women in the opening ODI of their tour after successfully chasing 211 with seven overs to spare.

After opting to bat, Sri Lanka struggled to build substantial partnerships despite several batters making useful contributions. Opener Vishmi Gunaratne gave the hosts a positive start with 28 off 38 deliveries, striking four boundaries before becoming the first of three victims for left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu.

Captain Chamari Athapaththu looked set for a bigger score, compiling an elegant 46 from 67 balls with six fours. She added 53 runs with Hasini Perera for the second wicket, but Nashra’s timely breakthrough halted Sri Lanka’s momentum.

Perera contributed a patient 35 while Kavisha Dilhari added another valuable 35 in the middle order. Nilakshika Silva remained unbeaten on 46 from 50 deliveries, ensuring Sri Lanka batted out their full quota of 50 overs to post 210 for nine.

Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack shared the workload effectively. Nashra Sandhu finished with impressive figures of 3 for 42, while Tasmia Rubab claimed 2 for 34. Umm-e-Hani, Syeda Aroob Shah and captain Fatima Sana chipped in with a wicket apiece to keep the scoring under control.

In reply, Pakistan laid the foundation through Gull Feroza, who produced a fluent 78 off 77 balls, laced with 11 boundaries. She dominated the opening stand before being trapped leg before wicket by Kavisha Dilhari after steering her side into a commanding position.

Experienced batter Sidra Amin anchored the chase with a measured 57 from 94 deliveries, rotating the strike effectively while building partnerships that kept Pakistan comfortably ahead of the required rate. Ayesha Zafar then finished the job with an unbeaten 27, while Najiha Alvi contributed a useful 13.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers found occasional breakthroughs, with Dilhari returning 2 for 37, while Inoka Ranaweera, Chamari Athapaththu and Nimasha Meepage claimed one wicket each. However, the modest target never placed Pakistan under sustained pressure as they reached 211 for five in 43 overs to take an early lead in the series.

Brief Scores:
Sri Lanka Women 210/9 (50 overs) – Chamari Athapaththu 46, Nilakshika Silva 46; Nashra Sandhu 3/42, Tasmia Rubab 2/34. Pakistan Women 211/5 (43 overs) – Gull Feroza 78, Sidra Amin 57, Ayesha Zafar 27; Kavisha Dilhari 2/37.

Sri Lanka stand on the brink of a potential breakthrough at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 as they prepare for a decisive Group Stage encounter against West Indies, with a place in the semi-finals firmly within reach.

After reviving their campaign with an impressive victory over New Zealand, the Sri Lankans have injected fresh life into their tournament aspirations. The win not only boosted confidence within the squad but also placed them in a strong position heading into one of their most important matches of the competition.

A victory over the Caribbean side would leave Sri Lanka well placed to secure a coveted berth in the last four, marking a significant achievement for the women’s team on the global stage.
Captain Chamari Athapaththu will once again carry much of the responsibility at the top of the order. Although she has shown glimpses of her class in previous matches, the experienced all-rounder will be eager to convert promising starts into a substantial innings capable of steering her side to victory.

Sri Lanka’s batting depth will also be tested, with Harshitha Samarawickrama, Vishmi Gunaratne and Nilakshi de Silva expected to play key roles. Their ability to anchor the innings while maintaining scoring momentum could prove decisive in a contest where every run may carry added significance.

The bowling attack has been one of Sri Lanka’s standout features throughout the tournament. Disciplined performances and timely breakthroughs have enabled the team to remain competitive against strong opposition, and another collective effort will be required against a powerful West Indies batting line-up.

Sri Lanka can also draw encouragement from recent history. Ahead of the World Cup, they secured a bilateral series victory over West Indies, a result that demonstrated their ability to challenge and overcome the Caribbean outfit. While major tournaments often present different pressures, that success provides a valuable boost to confidence.

West Indies, meanwhile, enter the match in formidable form after registering consecutive wins in the tournament. Armed with experienced campaigners and a fearless approach, they will be determined to preserve their winning momentum and strengthen their own semi-final ambitions.

With both teams chasing a place in the knockout stage, Sunday’s showdown in Bristol promises to be one of the most significant and closely contested matches of the group phase.
