New 60-ball Cricket Tournament from West Indies…

Published

on

West Indies Cricket Association and Caribbean Premier League organizers have introduced a new 60-ball cricket tournament called ‘THE 6ixty’.

The first-ever THE 6ixty Tournament is scheduled to play from August 24-28 in St. Kitts and Nevis with the participation of 6 men’s teams and 3 women’s teams. According to the West Indies Cricket Association, the tournament will feature a number of top cricketers.

West Indies Cricket authorities have introduced several new rules that are unique to THE 6ixty tournament.

In this tournament, each team will get only 6 wickets instead of 10 wickets. That is, with the loss of the 6th wicket, all the players are considered to have been dismissed.

One team has two powerplay overs, and in THE 6ixty series, the batting team has the potential to win even a third powerplay over if they want to. But to get the third powerplay, the batsmen have to hit two sixes in the first 12 balls.

The bowling team will have to bowl five consecutive overs at one end in this new series, although bowling will generally be able to switch the side from over to over.

West Indies Cricket emphasizes that if a team fails to bowl 10 overs in 45 minutes, it will have to bowl the last 6 balls without a fielder.

After being put in to bat, Sri Lanka ‘A’ posted a formidable 368/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Highlighting the challenges facing the national game, the minister noted that the decline in cricket along with other sports—has unfolded over more than a decade. As a result, he cautioned against expectations of a quick turnaround, emphasizing that meaningful progress will take time.

Building strong athletes and competitive teams is a gradual process. It’s not something that can be rushed or treated like a short-term project

Gamage revealed that the government has already put in place a comprehensive, structured programme designed to rebuild the foundations of Sri Lankan cricket. He stressed that the initiative is focused on long-term development rather than immediate results.

Responding to criticism from opposition groups, the minister dismissed claims questioning the effectiveness of the plan, insisting that the strategy is firmly on track.
