Wanindu Hasaranga slams umpires over non-no-ball call
Wanindu Hasaranga, the captain of Sri Lanka’s T20I team, expressed his dissatisfaction with the umpiring decision made during the final over of the third T20I against Afghanistan. He believes that the umpire, Lyndon Hannibal, should find another job after allowing a very high full toss to be considered a legal delivery.
Sri Lanka was chasing a target of 210 runs and needed 11 runs off three deliveries when Wafadar Momand bowled a delivery that was clearly above the waist, almost a beamer to Kamindu Mendis.
Despite the ball being clearly over the waist, the leg umpire did not react. Hasaranga stated that such incidents should not occur in international matches and criticized the umpire’s suitability for international cricket. Sri Lanka ultimately fell short by just three runs but still managed to win the series 2-1.
Hasaranga also highlighted the issue of not being able to review umpire decisions that do not involve potential dismissals, as per the current ICC playing conditions. He mentioned that if the third umpire can check for front-foot no-balls, they should also be able to review such high no-balls.
Hasaranga expressed confusion over the umpire’s decision and questioned what was going on in the square-leg umpire’s mind at the time.
