Sri Lanka’s Struggles Continue in Lower Age Categories at SAFF U17 Championship 2024
Sri Lanka’s disappointing run in youth football continued as the national team faced heavy defeats in the SAFF U17 Championship 2024. Competing in Group A, Sri Lanka failed to make an impact, suffering three consecutive losses.
In their opening match on 21st September 2024, Sri Lanka faced Bhutan, where they were overpowered and fell to a crushing 5-1 defeat. Bhutan dominated the game, leaving Sri Lanka’s defense struggling to cope with the relentless pressure. Sri Lanka’s solitary goal was a minor consolation in a match largely controlled by Bhutan.
Their second match on 23rd September against Nepal saw no improvement as Sri Lanka was outplayed once again, losing 4-0. Nepal displayed superior skill, controlling the game from start to finish, while Sri Lanka’s attack failed to make any serious threats.
The final match of the group stage took place on 25th September against Pakistan, where Sri Lanka suffered another heavy loss, going down 5-1. Despite moments of promise, the young Sri Lankan side was unable to contain Pakistan’s aggressive attack, marking the end of a dismal campaign.
Sri Lanka’s repeated poor performance in lower age categories highlights the ongoing challenges in youth football development. As the team exits the tournament without a single win, the need for a renewed focus on nurturing young talent becomes more urgent.
The Football Federation of Sri Lanka will need to revisit its strategies if it aims to uplift the future of Sri Lankan football on the international stage.
