SL Women Set for West Indies Tour with ODI and T20I Series in Early 2026
Sri Lanka Women are set to tour the West Indies for a white-ball series comprising One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals during February and March 2026, as part of their international calendar leading into a crucial World Cup year.
The tour will feature three ODIs and three T20Is, all of which will be played at the Grenada National Stadium, with matches scheduled from February 20 to March 3.
The ODI leg of the series will get underway on February 20, followed by the second and third matches on February 22 and February 25 respectively. The focus will then shift to the shorter format, with the T20I series commencing on February 28, before concluding with matches on March 1 and March 3.
The T20I series holds particular importance for both teams as they continue preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, set to be held in the United Kingdom. Sri Lanka and West Indies have been placed in Group 2, alongside hosts England, New Zealand, and two teams yet to qualify.
Sri Lanka Women will be aiming to end a prolonged T20I series drought, having not won a bilateral T20I series since lifting the Women’s Asia Cup in 2024. The Caribbean tour presents a valuable opportunity for the side to rebuild confidence and momentum in the format ahead of the global tournament.
West Indies, meanwhile, will take confidence from recent home performances, having won their last two home T20I series against Bangladesh and South Africa. Playing all matches at a single venue is expected to test Sri Lanka’s adaptability to conditions over an extended period.
The two sides last faced each other in the Caribbean in 2024, where Sri Lanka enjoyed success in the ODI format with a 3–0 series sweep, while West Indies responded strongly to claim the T20I series 2–1.
With both teams eyeing World Cup readiness, the upcoming tour is expected to provide a competitive and revealing contest across formats.

Pathum Nissanka set to open alongside KL Rahul for Delhi Capitals opener
Delhi Capitals are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign with a fresh opening combination, as Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka is likely to partner India star KL Rahul at the top of the order.
The Capitals face Lucknow Super Giants in their opening match today at the Ekana Cricket Stadium B Ground in Lucknow, and all eyes will be on how the new-look batting lineup shapes up. While Rahul’s role as opener is confirmed, the team management has been weighing their options for the second slot, with Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel also in contention.
However, indications suggest that Nissanka has edged ahead in the race, with the franchise keen to utilize his consistency and ability to anchor innings in the powerplay. His calm approach at the crease could complement Rahul’s experience, giving Delhi a balanced start at the top.
The Capitals have also bolstered their middle order with the inclusion of David Miller, who adds firepower alongside fellow South African Tristan Stubbs. The duo is expected to provide the late-innings acceleration that Delhi often lacked in previous seasons.
Despite missing Australian pacer Mitchell Starc for the opening fixture due to injury, Delhi still boast a formidable bowling attack. Captain Axar Patel will lead from the front with his all-round abilities, while the spin department is strengthened by the ever-reliable Kuldeep Yadav.
In the pace department, South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi brings experience and variation, having impressed with his clever change of pace in recent T20 competitions. Meanwhile, left-arm seamer T Natarajan returns fully fit after a lengthy injury layoff, adding further depth to the attack.

Avishka Gunawardena steps down from Sri Lanka Cricket role after reassignment
Former Sri Lanka international Avishka Gunawardena has resigned from his position at Sri Lanka Cricket’s High Performance Centre, bringing an abrupt end to his latest stint within the national setup.
The decision comes shortly after a reshuffle in coaching responsibilities, which saw Gunawardena moved from his role as head coach of the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team to take charge of the Under-19 squad. While the transition was part of an internal restructuring, it is understood that the change played a key role in his decision to step away.
Gunawardena had been overseeing the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team in recent tours and development programs, earning praise for his work with emerging players. Several young cricketers are believed to have benefited from his guidance, progressing steadily through the ranks during his tenure.
Despite his contributions at the ‘A’ team level, the shift to the youth setup appears to have prompted his resignation from the High Performance Centre altogether. The move leaves a gap in Sri Lanka’s player development structure at a crucial time.
As of now, Sri Lanka Cricket has not issued an official statement regarding Gunawardena’s departure, nor have they named a successor to fill the vacancy.

“Rohit and Ryan were exquisite to watch”: Mahela Jayawardena
The long-standing jinx has finally been broken after 14 years, as the Mumbai Indians secured a memorable opening-game victory at home against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Mumbai Indians began their campaign in style, registering a convincing six-wicket win in a high-scoring encounter.
Addressing the media in the post-match press conference, head coach Mahela Jayawardene appeared calm and reflective, acknowledging both the significance of the win and areas for improvement.
It is brilliant. It was a good wicket, and KKR got 220 on the board. I think we gave away 20 runs extra. The way Rohit and Ryan batted, it was exquisite to watch… brilliant execution. That was the game plan and these two guys played well Jayawardene said.
A key turning point in the match was the inclusion of Shardul Thakur, who delivered a crucial spell, picking up three wickets and helping Mumbai claw their way back into the contest.
Explaining the tactical decision, Jayawardene noted,
“It was again tactical because we could not have too many new-ball bowlers upfront. We needed some options in the middle and at the back end. That was the thinking when we traded Shardul from LSG as well it reflects our approach of building flexible bowling combinations depending on the opposition.”
The highlight of the chase, however, was the commanding partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. Rohit’s fluent 78 off 38 balls, combined with Rickelton’s impressive 81 off 43 deliveries, ensured Mumbai chased down the daunting target with composure.
Jayawardene was full of praise for Rohit’s preparation and leadership.
“Rohit joined us from the first day of the camp. He was very focused and fresh. He played some good matches, practice games, and had match simulations. I was quite happy with the way he was hitting the ball I thought he batted brilliantly.”
He further emphasized the tactical maturity shown by the pair, adding,
“The way Rohit and Ryan handled the opposition bowling attack was good to see from a tactical point of view. It was a great partnership, and long may it continue.”
Reflecting on their consistency, Jayawardene also highlighted their previous contributions:
“If you look at last season, Rohit and Rickelton did well for us at the top of the order. They were solid, and the way they complemented each other was great.”
With this emphatic victory, Mumbai Indians have not only broken a long-standing curse but also sent a strong message to the rest of the league setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting IPL 2026 season.
