What is the latest Impact Player rule in cricket?

Published

on

The BCCI is set to introduce the Impact Player rule in the upcoming season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy domestic men’s T20 tournament, which begins on October 11.

What exactly is this law?

Each team will nominate four substitutes on the team sheets at the toss, only one of whom may be used as an Impact Player during the match. Both teams can only use one Impact Player. This is not mandatory.

An Impact Player can replace any player in the starting XI before the 14th over of an innings. The captain, head coach or manager must inform the on-field or fourth umpire before the end of the current over. A batting team can introduce an Impact Player when a wicket falls or at the break of the innings. After an Impact Player is introduced in a match, the player can bat and bowl his entire four overs in consecutive innings. If a player is injured, the Impact Player can only be introduced at the end of the over in progress and is eligible to bat. Only 11 players can bat at any time.

Can the substitute continue to participate in the game?

No, the substitute can no longer participate in the game – not even as a substitute keeper. But if a player is injured while fielding in the middle of an innings, the current playing conditions will apply as calculated under MCC Law 24.1 – Replacement Keepers. However, if the injured player is replaced by an Impact Player, he can no longer participate in the match. Otherwise, the Impact Player can be introduced only after the end of the innings for the fielding side.

If an Impact Player is used by a team and an injury occurs, MCC Law 24 – Fielder’s Absence; Substitutes – will be implemented. If the umpires are satisfied that a fielding player is injured or ill during the match, a substitute fielding player will be allowed to field in place of an injured player. The substitute should not bowl or act as captain.

Will Impact Player Rule be used in IPL 2023?

There is no official communication on whether BCCI plans to introduce the rule in IPL.

BCCI IPL

Sri Lanka is set to make history once again as the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association (CICA) has been officially awarded the hosting rights for the 12th edition of the Indoor Cricket World Cup 2025 by the World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF). This prestigious global tournament will be held across two top-tier venues – the Austasia Sports Complex and the newly constructed U Pro Arena in Thalawathugoda.

The event is scheduled to run from September 27 to October 5, 2025, bringing together nine international teams: Australia (defending champions), New Zealand, South Africa, India, England, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, the United States, and host nation Sri Lanka.

The tournament will feature four major categories:

• Men’s Open

• Women’s Open

• Under-22 Boys

• Under-22 Girls

This marks a significant milestone for the CICA, which successfully hosted the World Masters Series just five months ago. Their proven ability to organize world-class events has been a key factor in securing this global competition.

More than 1,000 participants and visitors, including players, coaches, and fans, are expected to attend, making it not just a sporting spectacle but also a boost for sports tourism in Sri Lanka.

This will be Sri Lanka’s second time hosting the Indoor Cricket World Cup, having previously organized it in 2004. The upcoming edition will be the third major international event hosted by CICA within a year, following the England Asia Cup and the World Masters Series.

Historically, Australia has dominated the Men’s division, clinching every title since the competition’s inception. New Zealand has consistently been a strong contender, finishing as runners-up on multiple occasions. In the Women’s division, Australia has also maintained a perfect record, with South Africa and New Zealand trailing behind as regular finalists.

With world-class facilities, strong organizational credentials, and growing international interest, Sri Lanka is poised to deliver an unforgettable edition of the Indoor Cricket World Cup 2025.
