11- Player squad for Youth Commonwealth Games
Eleven athletes will represent Sri Lanka in Swimming, Athletics and Beach Volleyball events at the “Youth Commonwealth Games 2023” held in Trinidad and Tobago.
On 08.03.2023, as a result of a special request made to the American Embassy for obtaining visas for 06 team leaders, coaches and coordinators, including 11 athletes from the United States Embassy, due to the efforts and dedication of the Honorable Roshan Ranasinghe, the 11 athletes Visas were approved for 04 people and officials.
Accordingly, first, on 03.08.2023, 04 athletes and one official left Katunayake International Airport for this tournament and on 04.08.2023, the remaining 7 athletes and two officials left for Trinidad and Tobago.
Although the National Olympic Committee does all the organizing work for the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, etc. representing the country, all the tasks related to the visas, air tickets and insurance of the athletes for the Youth Commonwealth Games are now entrusted to the Director General of Abhinava Sports Development Department, Dr. Shemal Fernando. was entrusted.
Accordingly, with the full approval of the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Mr. Roshan Ranasinghe, the first task in the effort to get these athletes and officials to participate was to obtain visas from an EU country. But none of the states that provide that visa agreed to give the visa and even though they tried to get the visa through the United Kingdom, it also failed. However, due to the persistent efforts of the Honorable Minister, the opportunity arose to have Sri Lanka’s most talented young athletes participate in this tournament.

ට්රිනිටෑඩ් සහ ටොබැගෝ හි පැවැත්වෙන “යොවුන් පොදුරාජ්ය මණ්ඩලීය ක්රිඩා තරඟාවලිය 2023” ශ්රී ලංකාව නියෝජනය කරමින් පිහිනුම්, මළල ක්රීඩා හා බීච් වොලිබෝල් තරඟ සඳහා ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් 11 දෙනෙකු සහභාගි වේ.
ගරු රොෂාන් රණසිංහ ඇමතිතුමාගේ උත්සහය සහ කැපවීම මත ඇමරිකා එක්සත් ජනපද තනාපති කාර්යාලය වෙතින් ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් 11 දෙනෙකු ඇතුළත්ව කණ්ඩායම් ප්රධානී, පුහුණුකරුවන් සහ සම්භාහකයින් 06 දෙනෙකු වෙනුවෙන් ඇමරිකානු තනාපති තුමිය වෙත වීසා ලබා ගැනීම සඳහා කරන ලද විශේෂ ඉල්ලීමක ප්රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන් 2023.08.03 වන දින ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් 11 දෙනෙකු සහ නිලධාරීන් 04 දෙනෙකු සඳහා වීසා අනුමත විය.
ඒ් අනුව පළමුව 2023.08.03 වන දින ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් 04 දෙනෙකු සහ එක් නිලධාරියකු මෙම තරඟාවලිය සඳහා කටුනායක ජාත්යන්තර ගුවන් තොටුපළින් පිටත් වූ අතර 2023.08.04 වන දින ඉතිරි ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් 7 දෙනා සහ නිලධාරීන් දෙදෙනා ට්රිනිටෑඩ් සහ ටොබැගෝ බලා පිටත් විය.
මෙරට නියෝජනය කරමින් ඔලිම්පික් , පොදු රාජ්ය මණ්ඩලීය, ආදී තරඟ සඳහා සියලුම සංවිධායක කටයුතු ජාතික ඔලිම්පික් කමිටුව මඟින් ඉටු කෙරූනද මෙවර යොවුන් පොදු රාජ්ය මණ්ඩලීය තරඟ සඳහා ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන්ගේ වීසා, ගුවන් ටිකට්පත් හා රක්ෂණ සම්බන්ධ සියලුම කාර්යයන් අභිනව ක්රීඩා සංවර්ධන දෙපාර්තමේන්තු අධ්යක්ෂ ජනරාල් ආචාර්ය ෂේමාල් ප්රනාන්දු මහතා වෙත භාර විය.
ඒ අනුව ක්රීඩා හා යෞවන කටයුතු අමාත්ය රොෂාන් රණසිංහ මැතිතුමාගේ පූර්ණ අනුමැතිය පරිදි මෙම ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් සහ නිලධාරීන් සහභාගි කරවීමට ගත් ප්රයත්නයේ දී ප්රථම කාර්යය වූයේ යුරෝපා හවුලේ රටකින් වීසා ලබා ගැනීමටය. නමුත් එම වීසා ලබා දෙන කිසිඳු රාජ්යයක් වීසා ලබා දීමට ඒකඟ නොවූ අතර එක්සත් රාජධානිය හරහා වීසා ලබා ගැනීමට උත්සහ දැරූවද එයද අසාර්ථක විය. කෙසේ වෙතත් ගරු අමාත්යතුමාගේ නොපසුබට උත්සහය මත ශ්රී ලංකාවේ දක්ෂතම යොවුන් ක්රීඩක ක්රීඩිකාවන් මෙම තරඟාවලියට සහභාගිකරවීමට අවස්ථාව උදාවිය.

Sri Lanka Men’s 4x400m Relay Team Secures Spot at World Athletics Relays
Sri Lanka’s men’s 4x400m relay team has earned a place at the upcoming World Athletics Relays, set to be held in Gaborone, Botswana on May 2 and 3. The qualification comes after a strong showing at the Invitational Relay Championship in Chandigarh, India, where the team delivered an impressive performance.
Clocking a time of 3:02.16, the Sri Lankan quartet ranked among the top teams globally, marking the second-fastest 4x400m relay time in the nation’s history. The team featured Aruna Darshana, Pasindu Kodikara, Kalhara Indupa, and Sadew Rajakaruna, whose combined effort highlights the country’s growing strength in track and field.
This achievement not only secures Sri Lanka’s participation at the prestigious World Relays but also places them in contention for a major milestone. The top 12 teams at the event will qualify directly for the World Athletics Championships 2027 in their respective relay categories, adding further significance to the competition.

Sri Lanka Shines at Thailand Open 2025 with 11-Medal Haul
The Sri Lankan athletics team wrapped up a remarkable campaign at the Thailand Open Athletics Championship 2025, securing an impressive 11 medals, including 6 golds, during the competition held from June 21 to 25 in Bangkok.
The Sri Lankan squad, made up of eight athletes—four men and four women—delivered standout performances across track and field events, making the nation proud on the international stage.
Leading the charge was Rusiru Chathuranga, who clinched double gold in the Men’s 800m and 1500m events. Vicknaraj Vakshan added to the tally with a gold in the 5000m and a silver in the 1500m, while W.K.L.A. Nimali matched that feat by claiming gold in the Women’s 800m and silver in the 1500m.
Madushani Herath showed her dominance in the field events, capturing gold in both the long jump and triple jump. Ayomal Akalanka earned silver in the Men’s 400m hurdles, and Wathsala Hapuarachchi took silver in the Women’s 100m hurdles. Safreen Ahmed contributed a bronze medal in the Men’s triple jump.
While seven out of eight athletes reached the podium, Amasha de Silva narrowly missed out, finishing fourth in the Women’s 100m final, showcasing a commendable performance.
The full team is expected to return to Sri Lanka today after a tour that highlights the depth of talent in local athletics and signals strong potential ahead of upcoming regional events

Ritzbury Celebrates Sri Lanka’s Rising Track Stars and Coaches for Historic Medal Haul at Asian Youth Athletics Championship 2025

Ritzbury, one of Sri Lanka’s leading supporters of youth athletics, proudly honoured five exceptional athletes and their coaches for their remarkable performances at the 6th Asian Youth Athletics Championship 2025, held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The felicitation ceremony was held on May 2nd at Cinnamon Life, Colombo, under the banner of Ritzbury’s signature initiative, Mawbimata Weerayek (A Hero to the Nation).
Out of the eight Sri Lankan medalists at the continental event, five belong to the Mawbimata Weerayek program, showcasing the success of Ritzbury’s long-term investment in grassroots athletic development. These young athletes, who carried the nation’s hopes with pride, were not only felicitated with awards but also received financial support to further their sporting journeys.

Among the honourees was M.G.T. Abhisheka Premasiri, who brought home Sri Lanka’s only Gold medal in the Girls’ 800m and added a Silver in the medley relay. Dananjana Sewmini Fernando shone with two Silvers—one in the 100m sprint and another in the medley relay. Meanwhile, H.D. Shavindu Avishka (800m), G.D. Lahiru Achintha (1500m), and J.H.P. Nethya Sampath (High Jump) earned Bronze medals, contributing to Sri Lanka’s highest-ever medal tally at the championship.

Recognising the vital role of coaching, Ritzbury also paid tribute to the five national coaches behind this success: Buddhika Nuwan, Anuradha Nanayakkara, R.H.M. Jude Chinthaka, K.H.A.D.S.I. Kularathna, and Suranjith Senarath. Their guidance, discipline, and preparation were applauded as critical to transforming potential into podium finishes.



Speaking at the event, Kamal Geeganage (CEO) and Niluksha Bastiansz (General Manager – Marketing, CBL Foods International) expressed their pride and reaffirmed Ritzbury’s long-standing commitment to national athletics. They highlighted that the Mawbimata Weerayek program, launched in 2019, now supports 65 young talents across Sri Lanka with financial aid and mentorship, aiming to elevate Sri Lankan athletics on both national and international stages.
With their eyes now set on bigger global competitions, these young athletes symbolize a bright future for Sri Lankan athletics. Initiatives like Mawbimata Weerayek not only bring recognition but also lay the foundation for long-term sporting excellence.
