Wanindu Hasaranga has made the decision to step down as the captain of the National Men’s T20I team, as confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket in a press release on Thursday (11). Despite resigning from the leadership role, Hasaranga expressed his commitment to continue contributing as a player for the team.
Sri Lanka Cricket acknowledged his resignation and highlighted that Hasaranga will continue to play a crucial role in the nation’s international cricketing plans.
The news comes after a disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign for Sri Lanka, who failed to make it to the Super 8s after winning just a solitary match. The 26-year-old, who took over from Dasun Shanaka as T20I skipper at the beginning of the year, led Sri Lanka to bilateral series wins over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. But a disappointing T20 WC campaign has seen the legspinner quit the captaincy after just 10 games.
Hasaranga’s successor is yet to be named. Sri Lanka will take on India in a home white-ball bilateral series, beginning 26 July. They are yet to name their squad and skipper for the series.
